Hair Loss in Women

At first we may not realize that experienced hair loss, can be started from a few strands of hair left in the comb or the bathroom floor until the end of the scalp that can be seen clearly. Baldness is often described as excessive hair loss in head & can be caused by many things such as heredity, certain side effects of treatment or because of health problems. Although baldness is more commonly found in men, women also have this problem mainly hair loss. It is usually more concerned about the women because hair has always identified with the crown in women.

Type of Hair Loss in Women

Unlike men, hair loss in women typically begins before age 50 years & not related to heredity or a particular pattern. Usually women who experience hair loss are not aware whether it is permanent or temporary, because there are few events that can cause hair loss such as pregnancy or suffering from certain diseases.

Here are the types of hair loss in women :
  • Androgenetic alopecia
    Is a type of hereditary hair loss due to the pattern of thinning hair in the middle of the head.
     
  • Alopecia areata
    The pattern of hair loss that occurs due to a recurring & certain diseases that can occur on the scalp & eyebrows. 
  • Telogen effluvium
    A condition in which a threshing hair throughout the scalp, may happen quickly or slowly. Can occur due to high fever, severe malnutrition or due to chronic blood shortage due to heavy menstruation.
  • Hypothyroidism
    Thyroid deficiency is often associated with thinning hair or bald 
  •  Short anagen syndrome
    A condition that occurs when a rapid loss of hair before the normal growth cycle is complete
  • Gestation
    Hormone changes during pregnancy or the presence of stress during pregnancy can cause hair loss.
  • Traction alopecia
    The habit of combing your hair in a certain direction (parting) continuously can cause damage to the hair & scalp to make hair to fall out.
  • Certain chemicals
    Some of the specific chemicals contained in the tin packaging of hair care products can cause damage to the scalp resulting in hair to fall out.
  • Trichotillomania
    Or can also be called by the custom of pulling at the hair can cause hair to fall out easily.
      
Scale Hair Loss in Women
 
There are two rating scale of hair loss in women, namely the scale of Ludwig & Savin scale. In terms of intensity & destination are both identical, except at the Savin scale also assesses thinning throughout the hair. Treatment 
 
Baldness either permanent or temporary can not be cured, but for hair loss treatments can be done to help the process of hair growth. For some types of hair loss, hair usually grow back without treatment. The effectiveness of the treatment performed for the treatment of hair loss depends on the cause of hair loss, hair loss and the scale of each individual's response to treatment is done. Usually the larger the scale of hair loss then it also becomes less effective treatment.
 
Medications commonly used for treatment of hair loss are :
  •  Minoxidil
    Inventory containing minoxidil can be purchased at pharmacies without a prescription, usually for treatment of androgenetic alopecia dugunakan & alopecia areata. This preparation is usually a liquid that is applied to the scalp two times a day to help keep the hair growth & hair loss does not occur. Preparations are available usually consisting of a concentration of 2% and 5%.

    The new hair that grows from the treatment with minoxidil is usually much thinner & shorter than the others but enough hair to cover the baldness in the hair. It typically takes 12 weeks for new hair can grow, if after using for 6 months the results are less then a doctor may recommend to stop using. When treatment is stopped then the hair will stop growing. Possible side effects may include irritation of the scalp.
      
  • Finasteride
    The preparation can only be obtained through prescription & usually used to treat baldness in men. Finasteride can not be used for the treatment of hair loss in women, especially pregnant women because it has adverse effects on the fetus, especially the male fetus. Just like minoxidil then if treatment is stopped the hair will stop growing.
  • Corticosteroids
    Cortisone injection on the scalp can be used to treat alopecia areata. Treatment is usually carried out regularly every month. Sometimes doctors will also prescribe the use of corticosteroid tablets to cope with severe hair loss. The new hair will grow performed 4 weeks after injection. There is also a cream or ointment dosage forms but less effective than injectable preparations.
  • Anthralin
    Available in the form of an ointment or cream that is applied on the scalp. Usually doctors prescribe it to treat psoriasis, but sometimes can also be used for the treatment of other skin problems. Anthralin is usually used for the treatment of alopecia areata, new hair will grow approximately 12 weeks later.
  • Operation
    Hair transplant or hair transplant can be used for androgenetic alopecia cases where other treatments are not effective. At the time of transplant, the doctor will grow hair that comes from the bottom or side to a section of bald scalp. Usually it takes several times the transplant process to cover the baldness.

    This surgical procedure should be performed by an expert physician. The process requires high cost & also sometimes painful. The risk of side effects that may occur is the onset of infection and scarring. It took about 6 months for evaluation of the results obtained.
Another way to choose is to use a wig or toupee if the treatment was carried out did not give satisfactory results. When this has been available for several models of good wigs with real hair or synthetic hair that can be selected.
